Wherever you live, chances are the weather this Winter has been insane. Here in Florida, we have been going from the mid-70s one week, to the low-30s the next, and on and on the weather swings. We even had snow for the first time in three decades.
I love the cold. I have long dreamt of moving somewhere with stable seasons. But being a Florida girl, I never realized what the cold was going to do to my hair. And let me tell you, it’s not good.
The cold air is literally pulling the moisture out of my hair- leaving it dry, brittle, and FULL of static. I live in Florida! There is usually so much moisture in the air here that it takes two days for my hair to fully dry. I am not loving this new problem.
So what do I do? I put myself on full budget lock-down for the month of January, so there’s no way I’m buying all new products. But I can’t keep running around town looking like Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannadanna character either.
It’s time to bust out the DIY powers!
I went to the pantry and pulled out these 4 products (plus my trusty Essential Oils, of course) and they have made a world of difference.
- Honey. I am lucky enough to have a good friend who keeps bees, so my Honey is as local, organic, and heavenly as it gets. But even a little honey bear from your local grocery store will work wonders on your hair. Honey is a humectant- which means that it draws moisture to your hair and helps to seal it in as well. Honey is also full of nutrients and antioxidants that will feed your hair follicles and encourage stronger hair.
- Apple Cider Vinegar. I know, it smells less than fabulous. But once you start using ACV on your hair for a few weeks, you will never doubt me again. ACV works by closing the cuticle of the hair, which allows light to reflect off it and results in super shiny hair. It also removes product residue and gunk without stripping the hair. You will be amazed at how soft and smooth your hair feels. I use Braggs Organic, but any organic brand will do.
- Coconut Milk. Coconuts are like God’s miracle food. And Coconut Milk is a miracle for your hair. Full fat coconut milk contains proteins, Lauric acid, Vit E, and a whole plethora of minerals. By using it regularly in your hair you are both conditioning the hair and strengthening it. Coconut Milk has been shown to drastically reduce hair loss and breakage. Plus , it smells amazing! *Quick note about Coconut Milk- there is a lot of debate about using canned coconut milk because it is so high in fat, it leeches the chemicals out of the lining of the cans. Just to be safe- it is super easy to make your own- or you can grab it from the refrigerator section.
- Castile Soap. This one may not be something that everyone has in their pantry, but it should be. I use Dr. Bronners- mostly because I enjoy the insanity of the bottle. I don’t have particularly oily hair, but it still needs to be truly washed every few days or so. I like Castile soap because it’s as simple a cleanser as it gets- there are no weird ingredients in it all. Plus, it’s super concentrated- you need less than a tbsp to wash your hair.
My recipes for these ingredients are super simple too.
Shiny Happy Hair
1/4 cup of organic, raw honey
10 tbsp of Apple Cider Vinegar (I like Braggs)
Mix the honey and ACV together in a jar. Apply as you would shampoo- be sure to work it in from roots to tips. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes and then rinse with warm water. Use twice a week, between shampoo days
1/4 cup coconut milk- full fat
1/4 cup Liquid Castile Soap- I like Dr. Bronners
1/4 cup distilled water
10 Drops YL Rosemary EO, 10 Drops YL Lavender EO, 10 Drops YL Clary Sage EO, 10 Drops Cedarwood
1 tsp Almond Oil
Combine all ingredients in a jar and use as you would regular shampoo. Keep batches small so that your coconut milk doesn’t have time to get funky.
