Materia Medicum

A Materia Medicum is a book that contains detailed studies of individual herbs. For centuries they have been used by physicians,herbalists, academics, gardeners, and all sorts of cunning folk. The term comes from the Latin “healing materials”.

There are so many plants that have medical properties, and it can be overwhelming to find a starting place for a novice. I took Botany in College but I honestly didn’t focus on it enough to learn very much, so using a Materia Medicum is the perfect way for me to look at herbs individually and in detail.

As I study, I will be posting to this online Materia Medicum along with writing in an actual book- because paper makes me happy. I’m starting with the herbs that I am using in my shop but feel free to make any requests and I’ll put them on my list 🙂
